My Video Rental Updates.

2cg64marketplace.jpg

It’s been 14 hours since I started my V for Vendetta download.

The download is currently at 26% percent. Extrapolating, it seems I’m looking at about a 56 hour download!

Damn.

I can’t logout! I started the download on our “primary” xbox360. It’s on the big family TV. Today my wife wanted to watch TV while I was trying to finish off Oblivion, (trying to finish the game before the arrival of my new Wii!- tenetively scheduled for tomorrow or monday).

Normally I would just pop out the old Memory card and game disk, and head downstairs to our basement dungeon TV setup. But not today! Pulling out the MU will halt the download (at least that’s what I’ve seen before, when I’ve downloaded OTHER stuff). Now I’m forced to choose between interfering with my rental download and playing Oblivion, or being forced to learn “What Not to Wear“.

So I’m screwed. All my game saves are married to my profile. My profile is trapped on that Xbox until the download is finished. I REALLY don’t want to kill the download, and start all over again. Too risky. I might try to find a way to transfer the game save to one of my kids profiles and see if that works.

The current ETA for finishing the download is at 10 AM Sunday. And I’m yet again reminded how loud the xbox fan noise is. We normally turn the thing off, when watching TV. But now it’s a constant presence in the room. When I’m playing games, it tolerable, but while watching TV, it’s unpleasant. Turning the volume up helps, but it’s still annoying.

After this download finishes, I’ll try some experiments with smaller download files:

  • Can I move the memory card and hard-drive to another Xbox and play back my rental and purchases?
  • Will the videos work with Any profile in the system or only mine?
  • Can I start a download on one Xbox, move the hard drive to another, and continue it, or do I have to restart it?
  • Another interesting question? When does my 2 week rental period begin? Did it begin when I STARTED the download? How many days of playback “rights” am I losing while waiting for the download to finish?
  • Can I move video purchases to a non-Xbox hard drive?

If you know, please post a comment. I’ll test out what I can, when I can.

Update: I got smart! Fan noise solved.

Wholy shit. Keep me updated what happens with this please! I’d like to find out why Microsoft isn’t doing something to make downloads faster. We pay for a connection for what? Downloading 6 gigs in like 4 days! That’s stupid!

Seriously. I dont own an XBox 360, but i hope to have one in the near future. I’m not one of those console bashers, i’m more about the free-love for all consoles. However, the lack of proper customer support is, quite frankly, pretty disgusting. And I’m pretty sure that they’ll blame your connection for this depressingly slow download. Hope it all works out for you :D

I think my Customer Service problem was temporary holiday issue. Now I haven’t called in myself yet, but they are assuring us on xbox.com that that the reps can now give quick refunds.
