It’s Done!

Did a quick check on the old download this morning - and it’s done!

Maybe stopping and starting the download caused to find a faster bit of bandwidth?

Doing some bandwidth math –

  • The first 35% of the download took 19 hours. That means it was clocking about 256Kbs.
  • The LAST 65% took something less than 12 hours. that means it was clocking at LEAST 750kbs. Possibly faster, since I’m not sure exactly what time it finished downloading. I would be happy for anything close to 1mbs.

It may have been that when I restarted the download, I somehow re-negotiated a faster slice of bandwidth.

It could also be that so many customers have given up downloading, that there’s more left.

Or heck- maybe Microsoft added bandwidth!

Anyways, 4G in less than 12 hours is PROBABLY acceptable for an HD download.
Some other interesting facts: The “expiration date” listed on the movie says I have a little more than 12 days left. Which DOES MEAN, that your 2 week period begins the moment you START downloading.

I tried swapping the hard-drive and memory card (we store our profiles on memory cards - it’s the only way to move your profile between xbox’s). However the rental will ONLY PLAY in the xbox it was originally downloaded in.

So for a rental - the license is probably stored in the internal memory of the xbox. (It’s a more secure location than the hard-drive). If you want to share a video rental with your buddy, expect to haul the whole console around.

I’ll perform the same experiment later with a purchase.

I haven’t hit “play” button, since I won’t have time to watch the movie until later - and playing the video causes the 24 hour clock to start.
